Food larder delivers vital support

John (Mac) Mckenzie joined the Newmilns Community Food Larder shortly after the COVID-19 ‘lock-down’ commenced, as a volunteer, and provides vital support to those experiencing food insecurity within the local area.

Every Tuesday and Friday, Mac makes a difference and contributes to efforts made to lessen the negative effects of isolation. Mac sorts and prepares food boxes and essential provisions to those who need it most – and is a friendly face for anyone who visits the service looking for a chat.

Mac said:

‘At the Food Larder we ask no questions, and there are no forms to complete – just a welcoming environment and food! It has been very gratifying and I have many happy memories from this experience.’

The service was established as a response to the impact of COVID-19, recognising that food insecurity was increasingly acute in the local area and helps to provide basic needs for those who are vulnerable.

Food boxes are also hand delivered to any individuals who can’t leave their homes. The service is still available and operating from Morton Hall in Newmilns, East Ayrshire.

Mac is Treasurer of Campbell Area Tenants and Residents Association and Vice-Chair of Tenants and Residents East Ayrshire.

We hope you’ll join TIS in applauding Mac and the Newmilns Community Food Larder for their fantastic efforts!
