10:00am– 10:30am Social housing sector: Youth engagement report

A presentation of the key findings of a TIS study “Social housing sector: Youth engagement” focused on the barriers that affect the success of youth engagement, whilst highlighting good practice that others can learn from. This study was commissioned by the Scottish Government to gain a better understanding of the baseline of youth engagement in the Scottish social housing sector.

Callum Wynd – Tenant Participation Officer at Clackmannanshire Council
Callum Wynd – Tenant Participation Officer at Clackmannanshire Council will cover aspects of youth engagement, covering the ages of 9-25, within the Clackmannanshire local authority area. The presentation will show the ways this age group have been engaged with, particularly through the sessions run through the three high schools in Clackmannanshire.
It will also cover the engagement surrounding housing policy, again covered through sessions delivered to high school students.

11:15am – 12:00pm Youth Engagement at Fife Housing Group

Melissa Birrell – Engagement Officer at Fife Housing Group
Suzanne Hume – Engagement Officer and Melissa Birrell – Engagement Officer at Fife Housing Group will discuss their Youth Engagement project. Their session will detail how the project first came about, the different housing associations that they collaborated with in the beginning, and how they ended up delivering the project. Additionally, they will chat about both the successes and the challenges of this, as well as how they collaborated with a group of primary school-aged kids.

12:45pm – 1:30pm Barrhead Housing’s Brighter Futures Project

Bryan Dando – Community Investment Manager at Barrhead Housing Association
Hilary Smith – Tenant Readiness Officer and Bryan Dando – Community Investment Manager at Barrhead Housing Association will lead an interactive session on their work with young people in Barrhead. They will explore what began as their Homelessness Prevention project in 2020 to now working in 2 of their local high schools as part of Barrhead Housing’s Brighter Futures Project. They will also discuss delivering a tenancy sustainment course to pupils as part of their personal and social development studies, and their upcoming plans for a young person led Participatory Budgeting event in both schools.

The gathering will take place at the Maryhill Burgh Halls, 24 Gairbraid Ave, Glasgow G20 8YE, Glasgow.
Travelling to the venue
Maryhill Burgh Halls is located at the junction of Maryhill Road and Gairbraid Avenue, just across the road from Maryhill Library. The entrance is at the side of the building, on Gairbraid Avenue, and you enter the courtyard via the Firemen gates, where you will find the Halls on the right.
By car
The postcode for Maryhill Burgh Halls is G20 8YE. Gairbraid Avenue is closed to traffic, so turn off Maryhill Road at Kelvindale Road, then turn right up Burnhouse Street. Free on-street parking is usually available in the vicinity – although please note space outside the Halls itself is very tight, so please only park in the marked bays on Gairbraid Avenue. Six dedicated disabled spaces are available directly opposite the archway entrances.
The venue is about a 15 minute drive from Glasgow Central/Queen Street Train Stations/Buchanan Street Bus Station.
By bus
Maryhill is well served by buses to and from the city centre. The closest bus stops are on Maryhill Road, at Lochburn Road and Maryhill Library.
By train
The nearest mainline station is Maryhill, situated about 15-20 minutes walk (1km, 0.6 miles) north of the Halls, straight along Maryhill Road.
